Outside Edge (Archive)

by Richard Harris

May 1993

Outside Edge is a brilliant expose of the sporting male. Obsessive, chauvinistic and sexist, the only thing that really matters to him is the game – in this case cricket – and his own form (or lack of it). Richard Harris has managed to weave a superb comedy around this theme, with the interplay between the characters all the more hilarious because so familiar. And just as the sucessess and failures on the field are mirrored by their successes and failures with their women, so the way in which their women tolerate them (for the most part), rebuff them (occassionally) and just once in a while rebel complete, is all part of the comedy of the play.
